San Xoán Bell Tower History
The only exempt bell tower of the city of Santiago de Compostela is that, located in the “rúa das Campás of San Xoán“.It is a construction with a reduced size, which is attached to two residential buildings of the historic center of Santiago de Compostela.
This bell tower currently consists of a spiral staircase formed by 32 steps of granite masonry, which start from the masonry walls that form its circular envelope. This staircase only gives access to a platform, located at the height of a belfry built, this also, in granite ashlar.
The belfry has iron railings, no bells and above it is a gable roof formed by a wooden structure on which curved ceramic tiles are arranged.
On the deck is a stone Agnus Dei with an iron cross; the historians by its format date it in the s. XI.
The exact date of construction of the bell tower and its different elements (staircase, belfry and roof) is unknown, but different data have been collected on its possible history, in which documents from the years 1524, 1576 and 1578 have been found in those who already mention its existence.
The belfry of this bell tower currently has a Baroque format and structure (17th-18th centuries), therefore it does not correspond to the original bell tower, and it has surely disappeared.
